Sacred Heart Society of St. Francis of Assisi Church
The Sacred Heart Society of St. Francis of Assisi Italian Roman Catholic Church was founded around 1913. The society constitution reads: “The purpose of this Society shall be to foster devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus”.
Any catholic woman is eligible for membership.
The society balances activities through both spiritual and social tones. Spiritual events include Communion Sundays the first Sunday of every month, participation in Living Rosary with Exposition and Benediction, weekly praying of the rosary, and the annual Triduum in June on the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at which new members are inducted. Social events are the Mother/Daughter Luncheon in May, a reception honoring new members in June, and the annual Christmas Party, Members of the society say prayers at wakes of deceased members and also offer a Mass card to the family.
The society’s main revenue comes from membership dues, and the April Bake Sale. This income has made donations to our church possible.
In 1976 the society was asked to join other ethnic groups in the city to participate in the Cayuga Community College Craft Fair held each December to sell our Italian foods and to display items showing our Italian culture.
Home Enthronements to the Sacred Heart of Jesus are encouraged. A Sacred Heart picture or statue is used in the ceremony and remains in a prominent place in the home.
